Delphos, Kansas, population 360, founded in 1871, was laid out by a settler from Ohio in a square pattern common to his native state.  This included an area to be a tree-shaded park near its center, making it unique among north-central Kansas towns.

Today, the park features plenty of shade, playground equipment, benches, a band shell and historical markers recognizing a famous Indian raid that culminated with the rescue of a local woman by General George Custer.

Currently, a restaurant / bar, library, museum, post office and service station are located around the square.
Historically, the Delphos Co-op, the largest employer in town, is known as the oldest continuously operating elevator in Kansas, having been founded in 1901.

The Ottawa County Sherriff’s Department provides law enforcement and there is a well-equipped fire station staffed by volunteer firefighters.

Just west of town, on a prominent overlook, is the Zebulon Pike Trail marker erected by the locals to commemorate the Pike Expedition that passed there in 1806.
